Westfield Chatswood

Ever imagine a shopping centre evolving? Westfield Chatswood is a testament to such transformations. Westfield Chatswood first opened its doors on January 30, 1986. It wasn’t the first major shopping centre in Chatswood. Chatswood Chase had already claimed that title in 1983, along with smaller centres like Wallace Way and Lemon Grove. Westfield Chatswood initially stood alongside a freestanding Grace Bros store, which had been a local landmark since 1961. The early Westfield Chatswood housed familiar names like Target, which relocated from Wallace Way, Coles New World, and Franklins. The landscape of Westfield Chatswood changed significantly in 1999. The centre underwent a redevelopment to encompass the previously separate Grace Bros store, which later became Myer in 2004. This expansion also welcomed the arrival of Toys “R” Us. Change continued in 2008 when Aldi took over the space vacated by Franklins. In 2014, the global fashion retailer Zara arrived at Westfield Chatswood, marking its presence on February 13. As part of a larger corporate restructuring, Westfield Chatswood transitioned from Westfield Group to Scentre Group management in July 2014. More recently, in 2015, a $110 million upgrade further transformed Westfield Chatswood. This increased the centre’s gross lettable area, and by November 2015, the revitalized Westfield Chatswood unveiled a host of new stores. These included H&M, filling the void left by Toys “R” Us, along with Uniqlo, Mecca Maxima, and a relocated Rebel Sport, all opening on February 18, 2016. Westfield Chatswood today boasts an impressive 81,093 square meters of floor space, with anchor tenants including Myer, Target, Aldi, Coles, and a modern cinema. Westfield Chatswood continues to evolve, adapting to the ever-changing retail landscape and the needs of the community.
