Western Tech as it’s affectionately known started as two separate schools. Western Branch Technical School and Western High School of Commerce joined forces to become the institution you see today.
The Collegiate Gothic building standing proudly before you was constructed in 1927. Architect Charles Edmund Cyril Dyson designed this magnificent structure. An addition was made in the late 1960s adding even more space for learning. This isn’t just bricks and mortar though. This building is alive with stories. It boasts a pool two gyms a greenhouse a large library and even a media lab.
Imagine the hallways echoing with the footsteps of generations of students. Western Tech has played host to many notable figures. J P Anderson a renowned hockey player once walked these same halls. So did Gwendolyn MacEwen a celebrated poet. Don McKenzie a football player and later building superintendent at Maple Leaf Gardens was also a Western Tech alumnus. Bill Quackenbush another hockey player added to its legacy. These are just a few names among many who went on to make their mark on the world.
The school’s legacy extends beyond its walls. Western Tech’s influence is felt through its students’ achievements. Its rich history is reflected in its student newspaper The Hidden Agenda later revived as The Horseshoe. These publications document the lives and activities of Western Tech students throughout the years.
Western Technical-Commercial School isn’t just about academics. It offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. From traditional sports like soccer basketball hockey and baseball to less conventional ones like ping pong and even a Reach for the Top quiz team. The school prides itself on its commitment to athletics and offers intramurals including floor hockey volleyball and basketball. The school’s full-size pool hosts Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross courses at greatly reduced prices for students.
