The Western Cape Division wasn’t always known by this name. It started as the Supreme Court of the Cape Colony. Then it became the Cape Provincial Division. Later it was renamed the Western Cape High Court. Finally in 2013 it received its current title. This evolution reflects South Africa’s own journey through tumultuous times. Originally the court’s jurisdiction extended across the entire Cape Province. However over time divisions like the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape gained independence. This happened in 1957 and 1969 respectively. The Western Cape Division now presides over most of its namesake province. The only exception is the Murraysburg district which falls under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Cape Division.
