Established on 1 January 1828 the Western Cape Division of the High Court stands proudly in Cape Town. Its history is interwoven with the fabric of South Africa itself. Originally the Supreme Court of the Cape Colony it witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It played a vital role in shaping the legal landscape of the Western Cape.

The Western Cape Division wasn’t always known by this name. It started as the Supreme Court of the Cape Colony. Then it became the Cape Provincial Division. Later it was renamed the Western Cape High Court. Finally in 2013 it received its current title. This evolution reflects South Africa’s own journey through tumultuous times. The changing name of the court mirrors the nation’s transition.

Originally the court’s jurisdiction extended across the entire Cape Province. However over time divisions like the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape gained independence. This happened in 1957 and 1969 respectively. The Western Cape Division now presides over most of its namesake province. The only exception is the Murraysburg district which falls under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Cape Division.

Imagine the countless cases that have graced its halls. From minor disputes to landmark decisions. The Western Cape Division has shaped laws and precedents. It has influenced countless lives. The court has 31 judges. These individuals uphold the rule of law. They represent the pinnacle of legal expertise in the region. The current Judge President is Nolwazi Mabindla-Boqwana appointed in 2023.

The building itself is a testament to enduring justice. It houses not only courtrooms. It’s also home to administrative offices and support staff. The building stands as a symbol of the ongoing quest for justice and fairness. Its location in the heart of Cape Town underscores its significance.

The Western Cape Division isn’t confined to the city center. Judges travel extensively. They visit rural districts to bring justice to all corners of the province. These circuits cover various areas like the West Coast the Great Karoo and the Garden Route. They ensure access to justice for people living in remote areas. This commitment to accessibility is a hallmark of the Western Cape Division’s dedication to serving its people.
