West Side Baptist Church isn’t as old as some churches in Namibia. Yet its story is just as compelling. It’s a vibrant part of Windhoek’s religious landscape. Its history is intertwined with the broader Baptist movement in Namibia. A movement that faced significant challenges in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The rise of the charismatic movement presented a serious challenge. It led to divisions within established churches including Baptist congregations. Three Baptist churches in Windhoek alone succumbed to these influences. They broke away from their Baptist roots.
Against this backdrop West Side Baptist Church was born. Or rather it was conceived from a need for a new Baptist fellowship. People sought a return to traditional Baptist principles. They asked Pastor Charles Whitson a missionary from the Southern Baptist Convention in the USA to lead the way. Initially hesitant he eventually agreed. A fellowship began in his home in Klein Windhoek.
In June 1985 West Side Baptist Church was officially constituted with 21 founding members. This was a pivotal moment. It represented a commitment to preserving Baptist heritage in a changing religious environment. The early years involved the construction of a church building a tangible symbol of their faith. The first phase of construction was completed in 1987.
