Nestled beside the Imperial Palace, the West Garden of Kitanomaru Park whispers tales of bygone eras. Kitanomaru Park wasn’t always a public space. It was once the northernmost part of Edo Castle, a place known as Kitanomaru. This area served as a medicinal garden and a secure residence for the extended Tokugawa family. Imagine strolling through what were once private gardens, now open for all to enjoy. The park opened to the public in 1969, commemorating Emperor Hirohito’s 60th birthday. Kitanomaru Park is almost entirely surrounded by the original castle’s deep moats and fortifications. These remnants offer a glimpse into the past, a time of shoguns and samurai. Two original gates, the Tayasu-mon and Shimizu-mon, still stand. The Tayasu-mon, constructed in 1685, is one of the oldest surviving structures from Edo Castle. The inscription on its outer side confirms its age and significance. While the castle itself burned down in 1873, these gates remain as steadfast guardians of history. Within Kitanomaru Park, you’ll discover a blend of old and new. The Nippon Budokan, a renowned venue for concerts and sporting events, stands in stark contrast to the historical landscape. The Science Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, further enrich the park’s offerings. Though often overshadowed by Chidorigafuchi during cherry blossom season, Kitanomaru Park offers a tranquil escape. It’s a place where you can wander along winding paths, admire the cherry trees, and reflect on the stories held within its ancient walls. Kitanomaru Park, a hidden gem, invites you to step back in time and experience the echoes of Edo.
