“A church built by a father and son duo?” a curious voice whispered. That’s the captivating story of Wesley Mimico United Church. Right here at the corner of Station Road and Mimico Avenue, the Norman-Gothic architecture of Wesley Mimico United Church stands as a testament to a unique collaboration. The story of Wesley Mimico United Church begins long before 1925, with the histories of two separate churches: Wesley Methodist Church and St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. These two congregations, once neighbors, eventually united in 1927 to form the Wesley Mimico United Church we see today. The former Methodist church, built in 1923, became the home of the newly united congregation. Interestingly, the architects behind the 1923 structure were John Charles Batstone Horwood and his son, Eric Horwood, both members of the church. The Horwoods were prominent architects, their firm having designed landmarks like Toronto’s Bloor St. Viaduct and the Hudson Bay Company buildings in several Canadian cities. Their personal connection to Wesley Mimico United Church ensured a meticulous and high-quality design. The union of the two congregations wasn’t without its challenges. Initially, the plan was for a dual pastorate, followed by the election of a single pastor. However, the congregation favored one of the resigning pastors, creating some tension. Some members of the Presbyterian church, hesitant about the union, chose to re-establish Mimico Presbyterian Church. The early history of Wesley Mimico United Church includes prominent Mimico families like the Hendrys, Englishes, and Gaulds. These families played key roles in the church and the broader Mimico community, leaving their mark on local schools and institutions. Over the years, Wesley Mimico United Church has faced numerous challenges, including the Great Depression and changing demographics following Mimico’s annexation into Etobicoke and later Toronto. Yet, this church remains a significant landmark. The church building has also seen its share of challenges, with proposals for demolition and redevelopment causing concern within the community. Thankfully, preservation efforts have recognized its historical significance, and the building is now designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Today, Wesley Mimico United Church stands as a symbol of community, resilience, and architectural brilliance. It’s a reminder of Mimico’s rich history and the enduring power of faith and unity.
