Weerama developed from colorful beginnings. In 1978, the Keep Australia Beautiful Committee joined forces with the local council. They formed a Festival Committee. People from across the Werribee Shire comprised the committee. This group evolved into the Weerama Coordinating Committee. Now, it is known as the Weerama Festival Committee Incorporated.
The Weerama Festival is not just any event. It is built upon tradition. It includes the iconic Weerama Parade. The festival features amusements for all ages. Craft stalls display local talent. Various activities keep everyone engaged. Music fills the air. Much more awaits visitors of Weerama.
The Weerama Committee are the unsung heroes. Volunteers make up this group. They are elected to run the not-for-profit association. The Weerama Committee ensures that the Weerama Festival is a success.
For 2019-2020, Penny Rudge served as President. Jade McKenzie was Treasurer. Amanda Littlejohn took on the role of Secretary. Each member brought unique skills and passion.
Penny had lived in Wyndham for almost 20 years. She lived in Werribee with her husband and two young kids. Penny had experience running events. Her goal was clear. She wanted to bring Weerama back to its glory days. She aimed to celebrate Wyndham and all its residents.
For Jade, Weerama held a special place in her heart. The festival always fell on her birthday. She walked in the parade as a young child. Later, she watched her daughter do the same. Jade’s knowledge of Wyndham was a great asset. She had the passion to see Weerama succeed for generations.
Amanda found a love for planning events. She completed her diploma in events. This led her to start working with Weerama in 2016. She gained experience. Amanda found a passion for working for the community. In 2018, she completed the Building Blocks Community Leadership Program.
