Did Wenheyou in Shenzhen truly capture the spirit of 1980s China? Here in Shenzhen, Wenheyou aimed to transport visitors back in time. Wenheyou opened its doors in Shenzhen in April 2021. The massive 30,000-square-meter space in Luohu District, near the Hong Kong border, promised a nostalgic trip. Wenheyou recreated the look of a bustling city from the past. Streets, restaurants, and shops were designed to evoke the 1980s. The opening attracted a huge crowd. Over 50,000 people came to experience the retro atmosphere. The crowds were so large that scalpers reportedly charged exorbitant fees for milk tea from the popular Chayanyuese shop inside. Wenheyou wanted to be more than just a restaurant. It aimed to be a complete cultural experience. The goal was to create a sense of community and offer a taste of a bygone era. The company’s founder, Wen Bin, envisioned Wenheyou as the “Disney of the Chinese food industry”. However, Wenheyou’s expansion outside of Changsha faced challenges. Despite the initial buzz, maintaining the momentum in new locations proved difficult. The Shenzhen location even underwent rebranding, shifting its focus to Hunan cuisine. Wenheyou serves as a reminder of the power of nostalgia. It also highlights the difficulties of recreating authentic cultural experiences in a rapidly changing world.
