In 1964, a group of passionate motorsport enthusiasts gathered in Wellington. They shared a common dream: to bring the thrill of stock car racing to their city. This led to the formation of the Wellington Stock Car Society. Their vision materialized in 1968 with the opening of Wellington Speedway, originally known as Te Mārūa Speedway. Wellington Speedway, located in Upper Hutt, quickly became a hub for speedway racing in the region. The 385-meter clay oval track offered a unique challenge to drivers, making it a favorite among competitors. Wellington Speedway wasn’t just for stock cars. It also hosted solo motorcycle speedway, saloon cars, and sprint cars. This variety attracted a diverse range of motorsport fans, solidifying its place in Wellington’s sporting landscape. The speedway became known for hosting significant events. In 1973, it held test matches between New Zealand and England. These matches featured legendary riders like Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs. The event marked a historic moment for the sport in Wellington, as it was only the third time speedway had been held in the city. Wellington Speedway’s importance continued to grow. In 1978, it hosted a qualifying round of the Speedway World Championship. This event was won by Larry Ross, further cementing the speedway’s reputation as a premier racing venue. Wellington Speedway even hosted the New Zealand Solo Championship in 2004, showcasing the nation’s top speedway talent. Today, Wellington Speedway, also known as Wellington Family Speedway, remains a vibrant hub for motorsport. Run by a dedicated team of volunteers, it continues to host thrilling races and entertain fans of all ages. The track record, held by Braith Kalin, stands as a testament to the speed and skill displayed on this iconic oval.
