Established in 1958 the Wellington Potters’ Association has a rich history. It’s more than just a pottery studio. It’s a vibrant community. A place where creativity flourishes. Imagine the hands shaping clay. The kilns firing up. The annual Ceramicus exhibition showcasing amazing works.
The Wellington Potters’ Association began as a meeting of Wellington potters. It was held in Miss Doreen Blumhardt’s craft room. That was back in February 1958. The first committee was elected shortly after. The association incorporated in May of that same year. Their initial membership was 76 potters. The annual subscription was only £1.
Today the Wellington Potters’ Association boasts over 550 members. They have a fantastic facility. There are 15 electric wheels and 6 electric kilns. The studio is located on the edge of Wellington’s green belt. It is in Thorndon near the city center. Members enjoy 24-hour access to the studio. This includes a large library. There is also a collection of work by renowned potters.
But the Wellington Potters’ Association isn’t just about providing a workspace. They offer many activities. There are annual exhibitions and public events. They hold workshops and classes for members. These cater to different skill levels. There’s even a Tuesday Club morning. Mal Sole and Vera Burton offer assistance and answer questions. A Glaze Club meets monthly. Members explore new glazes together. Friday nights are for socializing. There are Friends & Family evenings and Show & Tell events. The association also welcomes visiting potters.
Beyond the electric kilns in Wellington the association also owns an Anagama kiln. This is in Horokiwi. It provides opportunities for wood firing. This wood firing happens once a year.
