Picture this. You stand before the Wellington Chinese Baptist Church. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. A history woven from faith perseverance and the unwavering spirit of a community.

The Wellington Chinese Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the resilience of the Chinese community in Wellington. It’s a place where generations have come together to worship. It’s a place where the Gospel found a home in a new land.

In the 1950s a group of believers consolidated. They formed a church. They needed a building. They raised funds. They received support from the wider Baptist community. They even received help from non-Chinese friends. Ex-missionaries from China helped. Members of other Wellington churches also contributed. Mr Arthur Donovan from the Central Baptist Church encouraged Rev Fung. Rev Fung spoke to many non-Chinese people about the mission’s work. For seven years they met in the R.S.A. Hall on Colombo Street in Newtown. The hall smelled of stale beer and cigarette smoke. The congregation came faithfully each Sunday. The Central Baptist Church Auxiliary helped fundraise. The wider Baptist community prayed for their success.

A significant turning point arrived in 1951. A generous anonymous donation of 1000 pounds launched their building fund. This gift came from Mr Yue Jackson. He was a Christian who wanted the Gospel preached to his countrymen. Mr Jackson’s gift had a condition. Church members had to raise another 2000 pounds. They did. They succeeded thanks to donations from across the country from both Chinese and non-Chinese people.

In 1957 their dream was realized. The church was built on Adelaide Road. Duncan Wu a church member designed it. Unfortunately years later in 1979 the church was sold. The city council refused permission for an extension. They couldn’t meet parking requirements. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1980 under Rev S Lau the current building was purchased on Donald McLean Street. Church members refurbished it.

The Wellington Chinese Baptist Church stands as a symbol of faith hope and community. It’s a vibrant hub. It’s a place of worship. It’s a reminder of a journey marked by challenges and triumphs. A journey etched into the very foundations of this building. A journey that continues to this day.
