Established in 1335 by Carthusian monks it’s the eighth oldest winery globally. They received this estate as a gift from Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg. After secularization under Napoleon the Karthäuserhof was auctioned. Valentin Leonardy a Francophile purchased the estate. It’s remained in the same family ever since passing through the Rautenstrauchs the Tyrells and now the Behler family. For over 200 years the Behler family has been its custodian. They’ve nurtured a legacy of exceptional Riesling.
The winery’s pride is its Karthäuserhofberg vineyard. A 19-hectare monopole site this vineyard is truly unique. Its south and southwest facing slopes bask in the sun. The reddish soil is rich in iron. It rests on weathered gray slate perfect for Riesling. The vineyard is mostly planted with Riesling vines some on original rootstock. These old vines whisper tales of generations past their roots clinging to the Devonian slate.
The distinctive neck label a true trademark adds to the winery’s charm. The story goes that Wilhelm Rautenstrauch the first owner after the monks created this label. He needed a label that would stay on bottles when chilling them in a brook. His ingenious solution has been a symbol of Karthäuserhof for over a century.
