But the Water Whirler is resilient. Angus McGregor from Canterbury University played a crucial role. He ensured the wand met Lye’s vision. McGregor also made sure it could endure Wellington’s testing conditions. He understood the work’s ability to withstand stress. It faces two million large amplitude stress cycles per year. That is in addition to wind loading. McGregor overhauled the manufacturing process. He identified a suitable manufacturer. The manufacturer was able to meet these demands.
C-Tech Composites took on the challenge. They manufactured a replacement tube. It is made of hollow glass fiber. Strategically drilled holes run along its length. The glass fiber allows significant oscillations. The tube is 10.5 meters long. It is made of three segments. These segments are joined with internal spigots. Additional laminate reinforces them. The assembled tubes are coated in marine-grade metallic grey paint. This matches the original sculpture.
Each tube weighs 25.1kg. The internal diameter is 44.2mm. The wall thickness is 7.5mm. These specifications ensure optimal performance. Wellington City Council is happy with the result. They appreciate C-Tech’s bespoke work. The wand shows good clean motion and flex. This reflects a precise fabrication process.
The Water Whirler is a joint commission. The Len Lye Foundation and others funded it. Its cost totaled $300,000. It has been broken before. In 2018, someone climbed the artwork. They snapped it in two.
