Perhaps you’ve asked yourself why this temple is called Wat Dongsavath. Today, we’ll explore Vientiane and discover some of its history. I am going to share the story of Wat Dongsavath with you.

Vientiane, the capital of Laos, boasts a history stretching back to the 1st century BC. Over time, the Khmers gained influence. They expanded their territory to include the Vientiane region.

In 1563, King Setthathirath made Vientiane the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom. He sought to avoid Burmese invasion. The city then became an administrative center. Vientiane became a hub of activity.

During French colonial rule, Vietnamese migration to Laos increased. By 1943, Vietnamese residents made up 53% of Vientiane’s population. There was even a French plan to relocate more Vietnamese people to key areas.

World War II saw Japanese forces occupy Vientiane. Later, French paratroopers reclaimed the city in 1946. The Laotian Civil War brought instability. In 1960, Kong Le briefly seized the capital. Later that year, Phoumi Nosavan took control.

In 1975, Pathet Lao troops entered Vientiane. This marked a turning point in the city’s history. Vientiane is known for its Buddhist monuments and temples. The city presents many cultural landmarks. Pha That Luang stands as a national symbol. King Setthathirath originally built it in 1566. It was restored in 1953. The golden stupa is tall. People believe that it contains a relic of the Buddha.

Wat Si Muang temple was built on Khmer Hindu ruins. Built in 1563, locals believe a local girl’s spirit guards it. Legend says Nang Si sacrificed herself when the temple’s pillar was set. A statue of King Sisavang Vong stands in front of the temple.

The Patuxai memorial monument is a city landmark. It was built between 1957 and 1968. Buddha Park, created in 1958, features Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. It is located near the Mekong River.

Other notable sites include Haw Phra Kaew. This former temple is now a museum. There is also the Lao National Museum. Do not forget Talat Sao. It is a morning market. Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan and Wat Si Saket are Buddhist sites.

Today, Vientiane is growing economically. The city is experiencing more foreign investment. Vientiane provides connections throughout the region. This emphasizes infrastructure projects such as the Laos-China Railway. The railway links Kunming, China, and Vientiane.

Vientiane has a tropical savanna climate. There are distinct wet and dry seasons. The wet season brings heat and humidity. The dry season offers drier and cooler temperatures. Vientiane has recorded a wide range of temperatures over the years.
