Isn’t it amazing how structures built for purely functional purposes can transform into something so unexpected? This is the Wasserturm Westerland. This striking brick tower, now a unique residence, once played a crucial role in Sylt’s history. The Wasserturm Westerland was built in 1927, the same year as the iconic Hindenburgdamm was completed. This wasn’t a coincidence. The tower, with its 100 cubic meter Barkhausen tank, was essential for supplying water to the steam locomotives that chugged into Westerland station, the final stop on the Marschbahn line. Imagine the hustle and bustle of this railway hub, the hiss of steam engines, and the constant flow of passengers all fueled by the Wasserturm Westerland. For over five decades, the tower diligently fulfilled its duty. Then, in 1984, the age of steam gave way to modern engines, and the Wasserturm Westerland was decommissioned. But this grand old structure was not destined for demolition. In 1992, it found a new purpose. A visionary purchased the tower and transformed it into a unique and enviable home. Today, the Wasserturm Westerland stands as a testament to Sylt’s evolving landscape, a beautiful blend of industrial history and modern living.
