A futuristic marvel. That’s what they called the Wasserturm back in 1958. This elegant structure of concrete steel and glass stands tall on Trier’s Petrisberg. It’s more than just a water tower.

Architect Herbert Montebaur designed this landmark. It was built to provide water to the military barracks and French housing estate on Petrisberg. The tower’s height is just over 39 meters. Its reservoir holds 412000 liters of water.

Did you know the Wasserturm was once cutting edge? Its slender design was considered avant-garde. The reservoir’s thin steel-reinforced concrete shell is supported by four sleek concrete pillars. These pillars widen from 0.45 meters at the base to 4.30 meters at the top. Clever engineering ensured stability.

The water tower served Olewig after a larger reservoir replaced it in the 1980s. The Wasserturm’s distinctive glass gallery encircles the narrowest part of the tower. This adds to its unique appeal.

Today the Wasserturm is a protected monument. It’s a visible landmark. Its elegant design reflects the aesthetic ideals of the 1950s. The tower’s nighttime illumination enhances its beauty. You can even climb the 144 steps to reach a viewing platform below the reservoir. A truly remarkable feat of engineering and architectural design. A testament to Trier’s rich past and its innovative spirit. The Wasserturm a symbol of Trier’s history and its enduring beauty.
