Waseda Junior High School & High School

In 1895, as the echoes of the Sino-Japanese War faded, a seed of education was planted. Right here, Waseda Junior and Senior High School began its journey. Founded by visionaries like Shoyo Tsubouchi, the school embodied Shigenobu Okuma’s ideals. Waseda Junior and Senior High School wasn’t just about academics. It was about forging character, fostering independence, and preparing young minds for the challenges ahead. Waseda Junior and Senior High School started with fewer than one hundred students and staff. For years, it was affectionately known as “Sochu.” The school’s motto, “Independence of Character,” reflects its focus on self-reliance and resilience. This contrasts with Waseda University’s motto, “Independence of Learning.” Both institutions, however, share a common thread: the belief in empowering individuals to overcome adversity. Waseda Junior and Senior High School’s history intertwines with that of Waseda University. In 1948, with the changing educational landscape of Japan, Waseda High School was established alongside the existing junior high. The connection strengthened in 1979 when the schools officially affiliated with the university. About 50% of high school graduates receive recommendations to Waseda University. Others pursue their chosen paths at institutions like the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Keio University. The school’s mission emphasizes sincerity, personality development, and fostering capable individuals who contribute to society. The six years spent at Waseda Junior and Senior High School are divided into three stages. The first two years focus on adapting to the environment and establishing learning habits. Years nine and ten emphasize intellectual and physical development. The final two years guide students towards their future careers and university preparation. The Homeroom System, with around 45 students per homeroom, provides personalized support and fosters a sense of community. Students participate in events like Sports Day and School Camping within their homeroom groups. Every year, new homerooms are formed, allowing students to broaden their connections and friendships. Waseda Junior and Senior High School celebrated its centennial in 1995. The school remains committed to nurturing future generations. It strives to equip them with the tools to navigate a world filled with both promise and challenges.
