“What a testament to peace,” you might think as you stand before the Warren Gamaliel Harding Memorial Stone. This unassuming monument in Vancouver’s Stanley Park marks a pivotal moment in history. It commemorates the visit of Warren G. Harding, the 29th US President, and the first to visit Canada while in office. In July 1923, Harding addressed a crowd of 50,000 right here, his words echoing a message of peace and friendship between the US and Canada. The inscription on the stone itself quotes his powerful words: “What an object lesson of peace is shown today by our two countries to all the world.” Ironically, Harding’s visit to Vancouver would be one of his last public appearances. He died just a week later, cutting short his term.
