Wangditse Goemba

High on a ridge overlooking Thimphu valley sits Wangditse Goemba. It’s also known as Druk Wangditse Lhakhang, or the “Temple of the Peak of Conquest”. Wangditse Goemba isn’t just a beautiful sight. It holds centuries of Bhutanese history. Established in 1715, it served as the seat of the 8th Druk Desi, Druk Rabgye. This makes it one of Thimphu’s oldest temples. Wangditse Goemba is more than just a historical site. It’s a living testament to Bhutanese resilience. The 2011 Himalayan earthquake caused significant damage. However, the temple was meticulously rebuilt. The restoration relied on a 1783 drawing by Samuel Davis and archaeological findings. This ensured the temple retained its original form. The restored Wangditse Goemba still houses the original large gilt copper image of Shakyamuni Buddha. He is flanked by the bodhisattvas Mañjuśrī and Avalokiteśvara. Eight large stupas, representing the eight great stupas, adorn the side walls. The second floor holds a temple with vibrant murals. These murals depict deities, Indian Mahasiddhas, and lamas of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition. A closed chapel dedicated to Yeshe Gonpo is also located on the second floor. It contains images of Shri Devi, Tsheringma, and protectors of the 20 Dzongkhags. A short walk from Sangaygang, Wangditse Goemba is a popular picnic spot.
