Overlooking the vibrant tapestry of Hong Kong, Wang Leng stands as a silent witness to history. Wang Leng isn’t just a peak; it’s a poignant reminder of a man who stood defiant in the face of war. Wang Lengzhai, the mayor of Wanping, a town near Beijing, played a crucial role in the events surrounding the Lugou Bridge incident, which marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. In 1937, amidst escalating tensions with Japan, a Japanese soldier went missing during maneuvers near Lugou Bridge. The Japanese demanded access to Wanping to search for the soldier, but Wang Lengzhai refused, suspecting a ploy to instigate conflict. His refusal and subsequent negotiations failed, leading to the Japanese shelling of Wanping. Wang Lengzhai, undeterred, continued to work amidst the ruins of the city. He and the 29th Army resisted the Japanese for 24 days, sparking a nationwide resistance. Wang Lengzhai later testified at the International Military Tribunal for the Far East about Japan’s role in the incident. He returned to Wanping in 1947, visiting the scarred remnants of the city and the Lugou Bridge. He saw the bullet holes, the rubble, the ghosts of the battle. While the war had ended, a new conflict, the Chinese Civil War, loomed, casting a shadow over his homecoming. Here, on Wang Leng, we remember Wang Lengzhai, the man who dared to stand against an empire. His story is an echo of resilience, a testament to the spirit of resistance that can rise even in the face of overwhelming odds.
