Walt Whitman High School opened in 1962 with a staggering 1418 students. Its initial design by McLeod Ferrara & Ensign was quite something. Seventeen levels a central courtyard and a geodesic dome for its gymnasium. A Ford Foundation grant made this architectural marvel possible. The dome was a real sight a futuristic addition to the suburban landscape.
But times change. In 1992 the school underwent a massive transformation. The geodesic dome and other buildings were demolished. A new school building arose in its place opening in 1993. This wasn’t just a renovation. It was a complete rebirth. The only survivor of the demolition was the auditorium a testament to its enduring presence.
Walt Whitman High School isn’t just about its past. It continues to evolve. In 2021 a 75000 square foot addition was completed. Eighteen new classrooms opened for the 2021-22 school year. This expansion reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to providing a top-notch education.
This isn’t your average high school. Academics are seriously impressive. Students average a 1312 on the SAT. This success is consistently recognized. In 2024 Walt Whitman High School was ranked second in Maryland and 139th nationally by US News and World Report. This speaks volumes about the school’s dedication to its students.
But Walt Whitman High School is more than just test scores. It has a vibrant extracurricular scene. The school’s FIRST Robotics Competition team is incredibly active. The Black & White the student-run newspaper is another highlight. It’s even been inducted into the National Scholastic Press Association Hall of Fame. And get this Walt Whitman High School is home to the country’s only student-run psychology journal. This impressive publication circulates to over 1000 psych teachers nationwide.
The athletic program is another source of pride. The Vikings compete fiercely. They’ve won eleven soccer state championships including two back-to-back titles in 2018-2019 and a fourth straight in 2024. The school’s only state basketball title came in 2006. That year’s leading scorer Michael Gruner shared co-gazette player of the year honors with NBA superstar Kevin Durant. And the boys tennis team has also won multiple state titles.
