Aimed to rival Prague Castle, Wallenstein Palace stands as a testament to ambition. Today, we explore this early Baroque marvel.

Wallenstein Palace was built by Albrecht von Wallenstein. He was a powerful Czech nobleman. Construction took place between 1624 and 1630. The palace is now home to the Czech Senate. Its history, architecture, and gardens make it a must-see.

Imagine Wallenstein’s vision. He wanted a palace grander than Prague Castle. To achieve this, over 20 houses were razed. Six gardens and two brickworks also disappeared. The palace’s size made it monumental.

Italian architects and craftsmen shaped Wallenstein Palace. Andrea Spezza was one of them. Frescoes and stuccos adorn the ceilings and walls. These artworks draw inspiration from ancient mythology. In the Audience Hall, find Vulcan at his fiery forge. Wallenstein is also portrayed as a warrior. He is in control of chariot reins. This suggests his arrogance.

Let’s step into the Wallenstein Garden. It is open to the public in the summer. Manicured lawns and trees offer respite. A pond contains koi and pike. Peacocks roam freely. The garden also hosts arts and culture events. Live concerts and performances take place here in summer.

Notice the artificial dripstone wall. It features grottoes. Look closely to discover faces of people and animals. Owls reside in aviaries within this artificial cave.

Consider the Wallenstein Riding School. Once, horses were trained here. Later, it became an automobile workshop. Today, the National Gallery uses it for exhibitions. Czech and international artists display their work here.

The palace complex includes residential areas. They extend around four courtyards. Stables, the Czernin atrium, and a two-floor wing are all here. The Wallenstein Garden is enclosed by the Riding School.

Note that Swedish troops once stole original sculptures. Today, you see copies in the garden.

Wallenstein Palace opens its doors on weekends. You can explore the palace from April to October. The Wallenstein complex is also open every first weekend of the month during the rest of the year.

Remember Wallenstein’s ambition as you wander. His palace now serves a different purpose. It is a historical monument and the seat of the Czech Senate. Wallenstein Palace is a place where art, nature, and history intertwine.
