This, my friends, is the Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes. The Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes isn’t just a museum. It’s a portal to the heart of Cologne’s forests. The idea for the Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes first took root in 1965. Originally conceived as a “forest educational exhibit,” the vision blossomed over time. In 1977, plans were revitalized and on May 23, 1982, the Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes opened its doors at Gut Leidenhausen. A year later, the Friends of Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes Cologne e.V. was formed, nurturing the museum’s growth. A major expansion in 1992 added a large event space, further enriching its offerings. Today, the Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes is nestled within the Gut Leidenhausen Environmental Education Center. The Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes houses a permanent exhibition that delves into the fascinating world of forests and their inhabitants. This exhibition is constantly evolving. Its aim is to highlight the unique development of Cologne’s forests. Cologne, despite its urban sprawl, boasts approximately 6,000 hectares of forest, making it one of Germany’s most wooded major cities. The museum captures this extraordinary aspect of Cologne’s identity. The Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes also hosts temporary exhibitions, concerts, and lectures in its spacious event hall. These programs are developed in close collaboration with the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald (SDW) Cologne e.V. and the Environmental Education Center. The Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes is more than a museum. It is a repository of knowledge about Cologne’s forests and green spaces. It is actively building a forest archive, sharing its insights through publications and the “Waldwissen” section of its website. The Waldmuseum Haus des Waldes is undergoing extensive renovations and is expected to reopen in mid-2025. Even with the museum temporarily closed, you can still explore the surrounding area of Gut Leidenhausen. Here, the spirit of the forest lives on.
