Was this entire park once underwater? It’s hard to imagine, looking at the grassy expanse of Waitangi Park. It’s now a vibrant green space right on Wellington’s waterfront. Waitangi Park hasn’t always been a place for leisurely walks and picnics. This park has a fascinating, multi-layered history. Before European settlers arrived, the area was a significant wetland known as the Waitangi Lagoon. The stream that fed it, the Waitangi Stream, was vital to the Maori people. They used it for food gathering, launching their waka (canoes), and as a source of fresh water. Plans were afoot to transform the stream into a canal after the arrival of Europeans. But nature had other ideas. The 1855 earthquake dramatically altered the landscape, lifting the land and forcing the stream underground. Over time, Waitangi Park served various unglamorous purposes, including a morgue, a bus depot, and even the site of a large incinerator. Thankfully, in 2006, it was reborn as the beautiful park we see today, complete with a recreated wetland that pays homage to its past. This revitalized wetland isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It also acts as a natural filter, cleansing the water of the Waitangi Stream, which now flows above ground once more. So, the next time you find yourself strolling through Waitangi Park, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history beneath your feet – from a Maori food source to a concrete jungle and now a haven for both people and nature.
