Established in a humble tenement building on Shek Kip Mei Street in 1953, Wai Kiu College emerged during a time when educational opportunities in Sham Shui Po were limited. Several visionary gentlemen, including Lo Hak Yiu, Lau Shing, and Wai Yee Chak, recognized the community’s need and took the initiative to found the school. Wai Kiu College quickly became a beacon of hope for local families. In 1958, the Wai Yeung Merchants Association stepped in to administer the school. This marked a significant turning point. It provided Wai Kiu College with greater resources and stability. The growing student population soon outgrew the original building. A dedicated “Committee for the Expansion of the New School” was formed in 1961. Members like Chung Yuk Hing and Cheung Koon Shing spearheaded fundraising efforts. Their efforts culminated in the construction of the current Wai Kiu College campus on Wai Chi Street in Shek Kip Mei. Even with the new campus, the demand for education at Wai Kiu College continued to surge. Recognizing this, board member Cheung Koon Shing generously donated $3 million for further campus expansion. Wai Kiu College’s commitment to progress is evident in its continuous pursuit of improvement over the decades. In 1968, the school applied to become a private secondary school, demonstrating its ambition to elevate its educational standards. Following the recommendations of Education Commission Report No. 3, Wai Kiu College joined the Bought Place Scheme in the 1990s. This government initiative allowed private schools to receive subsidies while maintaining their autonomy. The School Management Committee established the Wai Yeung Merchants Association Education Fund in 1999. This fund further solidified Wai Kiu College’s financial foundation and enabled it to apply for Direct Subsidy Scheme status. Successfully achieving DSS status in 1999 marked another milestone. Wai Kiu College became a Co-educational Grammar School under the DSS, allowing it to offer high-quality education while remaining accessible to the local community. Wai Kiu College stands as a testament to the power of community vision and philanthropy. From its humble beginnings in a tenement building, it has grown into a respected institution. Its story showcases a dedication to providing quality education and a commitment to continuous improvement.
