Perched atop this small island stands Waglan Lighthouse. It is a beacon of history and guidance. It is a landmark recognized throughout Asia.

Waglan Lighthouse has stood here since 1893. Imagine ships navigating the seas. They rely on its light to guide them safely to Hong Kong. The lighthouse marks the extreme southeast corner of Hong Kong waters.

The lighthouse was built by the Chinese Customs Light Department. This was under the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs. Waglan Lighthouse has operated continuously ever since. It protects mariners approaching Hong Kong.

Sir Robert Hart played a vital role. He organized the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. He also oversaw the construction of aids to navigation. Waglan Lighthouse was one of these crucial projects.

Initially, the lighthouse used a state-of-the-art light. It burned mineral oil. A rotating apparatus floated on mercury. Waglan Lighthouse was one of the first in Asia with this technology.

In 1901, control shifted to the Hong Kong Harbour Office. This is now the Marine Department. This change occurred after the New Territories Lease.

Life at Waglan Lighthouse was challenging. Keepers were away from home for weeks. Communication with families was limited. They found amusement in fishing, reading and gardening. They had to work hard.

Improvements came gradually. Powerful generators were installed. A standard pier made deliveries easier. Life on the island became more interesting.

Water shortage was a constant concern. Rainwater was the only source. Staff had to carefully manage their consumption.

During World War II, the lighthouse suffered damage. Japanese troops occupied the island. Allied aircraft bombed the area.

After the war, Waglan Lighthouse was rebuilt. It was modernized in 1950. It was even called the “World’s most modern lighthouse”. New equipment and facilities were added.

Today, Waglan Lighthouse is automated. It has been unmanned since 1989. Yet, it remains essential. It provides weather information to the Hong Kong Observatory. It also helps ships navigate safely.

The Waglan Lighthouse is more than just a structure. It is a declared monument of Hong Kong. It represents maritime history. It stands as a testament to innovation and resilience. Its light continues to shine. It guides and protects all who sail these waters.
