Waerenga Hut boasts a rich history. The Tararua Tramping Club has maintained a hut near this location since 1931. The current structure however is much newer. Built in 1961 it was relocated in 2009. Massive floods in 2005 undermined its original position. This relocation ensured Waerenga Hut’s continued existence. The hut’s name is quite fitting. Waerenga means clearing. It perfectly describes the hut’s peaceful setting. Inside Waerenga Hut you’ll find more amenities than your average DOC hut. There are bunks for 15 people plus extra mattresses. A kitchen sink provides drinkable water. Plates cutlery pots and pans are readily available. Even a coffee plunger and teapot are provided for a comforting brew. Books and games help pass the time. Pillows and cushions add to the cozy atmosphere. A wood burner keeps the hut warm. There’s an ample supply of firewood an axe and a bush saw. Brooms help keep the place clean. However remember to bring your own cooker and fuel. Make sure to set up your cooker securely before lighting it. Waerenga Hut is locked. Members of the Tararua Tramping Club can use it for free. School groups and others may book it for a fee. Non-members must be accompanied by a member. Adult non-members pay $10 per night. So come and experience the magic of Waerenga Hut. Explore the many walks and tramps in the Remutaka Forest Park. Climb Mt Matthews or visit other peaks. Discover the South Coast Wainuiomata or the Wairarapa. Or simply unwind and escape from it all.
