Established in 1919 the T G Masaryk Water Research Institute stands before us. It’s a testament to Czech ingenuity. This wasn’t just another research facility. It was a beacon of hope in a newly independent nation.

The Institute’s birth was a direct response to a pressing need. Czech engineers lacked the resources to test their innovative ideas. They relied on speculation. This hampered progress. The State Hydrological Institute offered a solution. It provided a critical testing ground. This allowed engineers to create innovative water management solutions.

The Institute’s early years were humble. Staff worked in scattered locations throughout Prague. Conditions were inadequate. This affected research. The dream of a purpose-built facility began to take shape in 1921. It finally came to fruition in Prague-Podbaba.

Construction began in 1927. Architect František Bartoš designed the building. The calibration channel was the first structure to be completed. Building A with its hydrotechnical laboratory followed. The Institute flourished. By 1933 it had 34 employees. Building B was completed that year. The staff could focus on research.

President T G Masaryk understood the importance of science. He believed a nation’s success relied on a strong scientific foundation. The Institute’s staff honored him in 1930. They added his name to the Institute’s official title. He even visited the Institute in 1933.

The Institute’s scope expanded. It tackled water problems caused by industrialization. Regional offices opened in Ostrava and Brno. The Bratislava office later became an independent institution. The focus remained on solving regional water challenges.

Post-war development presented new challenges. The Institute’s research expanded into water purity wastewater treatment and water supply. It maintained its expertise in hydrology and hydrotechnics. A new building was constructed including a hydrotechnic laboratory.

Floods tested the Institute’s resilience. The devastating 2002 flood caused significant damage. Yet the Institute persevered. The staff worked tirelessly. They restored the facilities with support from state and international partners. The Institute’s research continues. It remains dedicated to its mission protecting water resources. This enduring institution embodies the spirit of innovation. It’s a legacy President Masaryk would surely be proud of. The T G Masaryk Water Research Institute continues to shape the future of water management in the Czech Republic.
