Did Josef Volman ever imagine his luxurious villa becoming a kindergarten? Here we stand before Volmanova vila, a testament to Czech functionalism and a unique blend of European modernism. Volman, a successful entrepreneur, commissioned young architects Karel Janů and Jiří Štursa to design his dream home in 1938. Completed in 1939, Volmanova vila stands as a sister to the iconic Villa Tugendhat in Brno. The architects, admirers of Le Corbusier, incorporated his principles of simplicity, functionality, and harmony with nature into their design. The villa showcases sharp lines interwoven with curved walls and details. Smooth surfaces contrast with stone elements and travertine. Inside, luxurious materials abound, including various types of marble, chrome details, and exotic wood. The expansive terraces, reminiscent of a captain’s bridge, offer breathtaking views of the surrounding park and the Elbe River. Volmanova vila is often described as a steamship anchored on the horizon. Sadly, Volman only enjoyed his villa for four years before his death in 1943. After his daughter and her husband were forced to leave in 1948, the villa served a state-owned company. It then housed a kindergarten until 1990. Left in disrepair, the villa was purchased in 1996 by a group of entrepreneurs who meticulously restored it to its former glory. This restoration even won an award in the Building of the Year 2016 competition. Today, Volmanova vila stands as a testament to the resilience of architectural beauty, inviting you to step back in time and experience the elegance of the interwar period.
