Since 1984, the Volkskundemuseum Mödling has resided in an old wine tavern. This building dates back to the 16th or 17th century. Imagine the stories held within these very walls. The museum unveils a rich collection. These objects reflect the everyday lives of earlier generations.
Inside the Volkskundemuseum Mödling, exhibits showcase the life, living, and working history of the Mödling area. You can explore the past and present of wine-growing. Historical carts are displayed in the barn. There is even a complete smithy from around 1900. This provides a diversified picture of life here.
The Volkskundemuseum Mödling also features a farmer’s garden. It is located in the inner courtyard. This garden was created based on old monastery gardens. It is a peaceful retreat. It connects visitors to the agricultural roots of the region.
A special highlight is the “Advent im Volkskundemuseum”. The “Osterhaus” showcases the blending of old and new folk art. From the first Advent Sunday to January 6th, the museum displays a mechanical “Egerländer Krippe”. This crib dates back to the 19th century.
The “Egerländer Krippe” originated in Egerland in northwest Bohemia. It came to Mödling in 1926. It was set up in the newly founded parish of Herz Jesu. The moving elements of the crib are remarkable. While an electronic control now operates it, parts of the original mechanism are displayed in a small Sacral Museum.
The Volkskundemuseum Mödling started as a collection in the Museum im Thonetschlössl. Melanie Wissor curated it. In 1984, the expanded collection moved to its own house. This Weinhauerhaus from the 16th to 17th century became its home. Since 1994, the old mechanical “Egerländer Krippe” has been a highlight here.
