Let’s delve into the history of this area. Swakopmund holds a deep-rooted history extending to the late 15th century. Portuguese navigator Bartholomew Diaz arrived at Cape Cross in 1487. He raised a stone cross to mark his presence. In 1793 two Dutch sailors briefly anchored at the Swakop River mouth. In 1862 a German gunboat’s crew hoisted their flag at the same spot. This marked the coastal area’s occupation.

During the colonial era Swakopmund played a pivotal role as a harbor. Shallow coastal waters without a sheltered lagoon made it difficult. Nearby Walvis Bay was already under British control. This further emphasized Swakopmund’s significance for German colonial endeavors.

To overcome the challenges settlers faced landing in rough surf a costly artificial harbor was constructed. Regular freight traffic commenced in 1894. It was managed by a Hamburg-based shipping company. Initially a 325-meter wooden jetty was built in 1902. Later it was replaced by an iron one in 1912. The remnants of this historic jetty are visible today. It has been repurposed. An oyster bar opened in 2010 on the structure known as the ‘Jetty.’

Here at Vogelstrand you find comfortable and spacious accommodation units. They are fitted with comfortable beds and good furniture.
