Gazing at Vision del Futuro, you might think your eyes are playing tricks on you. The vibrant mural shimmers with red and blue lines, creating a dizzying effect. But this is no optical illusion. It’s San Antonio’s first 3D stereoscopic mural. Vision del Futuro was dedicated in September 2014. It was a collaborative project of the San Anto Cultural Arts Center, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The mural is more than just a painting. It’s an interactive experience. A key component of Vision del Futuro is a large sculpture of 3D glasses. The glasses feature the classic red and cyan lenses, instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with old-school 3D movies. The mural itself comes alive when viewed through 3D glasses. The artwork features Tejano musician Alvaro del Norte of Piñata Protest playing his accordion. He’s surrounded by iconic San Antonio imagery. A taco, chips and salsa, a rattlesnake, and even the face of former Mayor Julian Castro are all represented. These images, chosen by the community, pop out in three dimensions when viewed with 3D glasses. Vision del Futuro has faced challenges. The sculpture has been vandalized in the past. However, the community has rallied around the artwork. They are determined to protect this unique piece of public art for future generations. So, grab a pair of 3D glasses and experience the Vision del Futuro for yourself. It’s a vibrant celebration of San Antonio’s culture, past, present, and future.
