Imagine stepping back in time to 1942. This building now housing the USAF Airman Heritage Museum was the in-processing center for aviation cadets. It is the starting point of our journey today.

The USAF Airman Heritage Museum stands as a tribute to the enlisted airmen of the United States Air Force. It is located at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio Texas. The museum preserves and honors the history of these airmen.

Originally known as the History and Traditions Museum it opened in 1956. It was one of twelve satellite museums to the National Museum of the United States Air Force. In 2010 the museum received its current name.

Bill Manchester is the director of the Airman Heritage Training Complex. He notes that the museum covers the history of JBSA-Lackland. This includes its time as part of Kelly Field in 1942. It also covers its designation as “The Gateway to the Air Force” in 1947.

Inside the USAF Airman Heritage Museum you will find more than 4000 artifacts. These items date from 1907 to the present. They are on loan from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

The museum boasts 35 exhibits. These include scale models of planes and a B-24 bomber simulator. There is even an original Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” biplane. This aircraft was a primary training plane during World War I.

Outside the Airman Heritage Museum, over 40 aircraft are on display. These Static Display Aerospace Vehicles are located at the Parade Ground Airpark. They represent eight decades of Army Air Corps and Air Force history. Aircraft include the SR-71A “Blackbird”.

In 2019 the Airman Heritage Museum had 36000 visitors. It continues to educate and inspire. The Airman Heritage Foundation supports the museum. It raises funds to preserve the legacy of enlisted airmen.

The museum also includes the Security Forces Exhibit Annex. It contains 47 exhibits. These exhibits focus on the history of the Air Force Security Forces since 1947. Exhibits highlight women in the Security Forces and military working dogs.
