High above, on this rocky crest, lies Visättra fornborg. Have you ever wondered about the stories these stones could tell?
Visättra fornborg offers us a glimpse into a distant past. It is also called Flemingsbergsvikens fornborg. This ancient hill fort sits between Solgård and Visättra in Huddinge. The area is part of the Flemingsbergsskogen nature reserve. It is located near Flemingsbergsviken’s innermost part.
Imagine Vikings setting foot here. Archaeological finds suggest the area around Flemingsbergsviken was colonized during the Viking Age. A waterway once connected Orlången lake to Tullingesjön lake. It stretched via Albysjön to Lake Mälaren. Visättra fornborg watched over this vital route.
Around 1.4 kilometers northwest lies Visättra fornborg. Opposite it, stood Solgårds fornborg. The Huddingeleden hiking trail passes below. It marks the remains of an old road. This road once linked Flemingsberg, Stensättra, Sundby, Björksättra, and Lissma. It was abandoned in the 1850s.
Visättra fornborg covers an area of 110 by 70 meters. The fort occupies a high mountain ridge. On the eastern side, you can see a constructed wall. It is about 40 meters long. The wall is about 4 meters wide and 0.4 meters high. It is built with graystones. These stones measure 0.4 to 0.6 meters.
About midway along the wall is an entrance. It is roughly 2 meters wide. This may have been added later. Stones from the wall have fallen down the slope. To the north and west, the mountain drops sharply. On the west side, there is a ravine. This ravine may have served as an entry point to the fort. But there are no traces of a wall.
Flemingsbergsviken extended further west during the Iron Age. The marshy area north of the fort was then a lake. It connected to Orlången, Magelungen, and Drevviken. Stensättraborgen is on the same side of this bay. It lies approximately 1.2 km southeast.
The fort’s size and location were strategically chosen. The hill fort takes advantage of the natural terrain. Steep cliffs provide natural defenses. The wall on the east provides additional protection. The landscape offered clear views. Defenders could monitor movement along the waterway.
