Here at Vint Hill Farms, whispers of spies and secret missions echo through the fields. This wasn’t always a place of wineries and breweries. Vint Hill Farms began as a simple farm dating back to 1772.
Andrew Low acquired Vint Hill in 1860. He used the property as a sheep and cattle farm. The Civil War soon reached this area. Confederate leader John “Gray Ghost” Mosby agitated Union troops here.
In 1911 Mitchell Harrison bought Vint Hill. He transformed it into a charming country estate. The Manor House expanded. It is now known as the Inn at Vint Hill. Harrison also added the slate roof barn complex.
Everything changed in 1942. Farmers noticed they were intercepting German messages. The U.S. Army discovered Vint Hill sat on a rare geological formation. This formation acted as a long-range antenna. Messages direct from Berlin were coming through.
The Army purchased Vint Hill from Harrison. Monitoring Station No. 1 was born. Vint Hill Farms became a critical intelligence hub.
Primarily staffed by women from the Women’s Army Corps, they translated Morse code. These intelligent women provided raw data to analysts. The information informed critical military decisions.
In 1943 Private Leonard A. Mudloff intercepted a transmission. It contained crucial information about Nazi Germany’s plans in Normandy. The “Oshima intercept” directly influenced D-Day. The Allied invasion changed the course of the war.
Vint Hill Farms Station remained active after World War II. It became a training center for cryptanalysts and radio operators. Vint Hill played a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. In 1974 its mission shifted to research and development. The base closed in 1997 after the Cold War.
The Vint Hill Economic Development Authority transformed the army base. It became a mixed-use community. Vint Hill now blends its historic past with modern life.
Today you can visit the Cold War Museum here. It showcases artifacts and stories from that era. The Inn at Vint Hill offers an escape room experience. It puts you in the shoes of President John Kennedy.
