Have you noticed the striking contrast between this island and the capital? We are now on Villingili. This tranquil island offers a serene escape from Malé’s hectic pace. Villingili is also known as Villimalé. It’s a world away from the bustling city.
Villingili is located just a short ferry ride west of Malé. It is the fifth district of Malé City. The ferry operates 24 hours a day. Imagine stepping off the ferry and feeling the gentle sea breeze. Palm trees line the shore. The island is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle.
Historically, Villingili faced a tough time. Malabar pirates often looted and burned it. They were frustrated by Malé’s defenses. In 1961, residents were resettled to Hulhulé. This freed up agricultural land near Malé. A prison was built here in 1962. Later, in 1973, a resort opened.
Before becoming residential, Villingili was a resort. It was the second resort in the Maldives. The first, Kurumba, was overbooked. Between 2010 and 2016, there was a drug rehabilitation center. It was near the public beach.
