Curious about a tale of islands and international interests? Right here we are at Feydhoo Finolhu. This small island holds a story far bigger than its landmass.

Feydhoo Finolhu is the closest uninhabited island to Malé. It also sits near the international airport. This location makes it strategically significant. For years Feydhoo Finolhu served different purposes. The police welfare company once used it. The education ministry organized school trips here. Cadets, scouts, and girl guides enjoyed activities on its shores.

In 2016, things changed. The Maldivian government leased Feydhoo Finolhu to a Chinese company for 50 years. The deal was worth about US$4 million. Tourism Minister Moosa Zameer revealed this. He said Feydhoo Finolhu was the only listed property leased for resort development so far. The government evaluated proposals for other islands and lagoons. The minister did not disclose the name of the Chinese company at the time.

This leasing process stirred controversy. The tourism law was revised to allow bypassing competitive bidding. This meant the government could lease properties directly. They would choose parties with suitable proposals at a pre-determined cost.

Opposition figures criticized the valuation of Feydhoo Finolhu. They argued it was worth much more. One former youth minister estimated its value at US$15 million if put up for bidding. The island’s proximity to the airport boosted its potential. The Maldivian Democratic Party vowed to cancel corrupt deals. They promised to reclaim properties leased without bidding.

Some reports suggest the island’s development has been unusual. There are claims of accelerated drilling, dredging, and landfilling. This expanded the island significantly. A harbor was created and some suspect it could be used for military purposes.

Adding to the intrigue, some sources allege the island is becoming a Chinese military outpost. China has been expanding its influence in the Indian Ocean. This is through a strategy called the String of Pearls. The Chinese government denies these claims. The company leasing Feydhoo Finolhu maintains it is developing a resort.

The story of Feydhoo Finolhu reflects complex international dynamics. It involves tourism, strategic location, and geopolitical interests. This small island embodies a bigger narrative. A narrative about power, influence, and the changing landscape of the Maldives.
