Villa Tivan

Nestled along the Terraglio, the historic roadway connecting Treviso and Mestre, stands Villa Tivan. This grand Venetian villa whispers tales of centuries past. Villa Tivan’s story begins, perhaps, in 1734. Or maybe 1779, or even 1799. The historical records offer a delightful puzzle. One moment, the villa is listed among demolished buildings in 1842. Shortly after, it reappears, rejuvenated and vibrant. One intriguing theory suggests the Pezzana family, the original owners, significantly restructured the villa in the late 18th century. Later, in the 19th century, it passed into the hands of the Marin family. They undertook further renovations, creating the beautiful park we see today. Finally, it came under the ownership of the Tivan family, whose name it now bears. Since World War II, Villa Tivan has been part of the state property and has recently undergone restoration. The villa stands as a testament to its rich history, with its main building, the former stable, a greenhouse, and a newer annex. The main house, a compact three-story structure, features a facade divided into two distinct sections. The lower section, including the ground floor and mezzanine, is adorned with bugnato, a rusticated stone treatment. This creates nine bays along the facade. The two outer bays belong to slightly lower side wings, adding a sense of balance. A cornice separates this section from the third floor. The third floor has a row of seven windows, culminating in a pediment crowned with statues. To the west, a four-bay portico extends gracefully. At the southeast corner, facing the Terraglio, stands the charming Cappellina della Santissima Trinità. Built by the Pezzana family in 1734, it houses a marble sculpture of the Trinity, possibly crafted by the renowned artist Giuseppe Torretti. Today, Villa Tivan serves a dual purpose. Its park has become a public garden, a tranquil oasis where locals and visitors can stroll amidst the greenery. Within the villa’s walls, offices of the Regional Directorate of the State Property Agency now reside. The villa’s history echoes within its walls, a reminder of its journey through time.
