Had Jakob Stempel known he would never live in the magnificent Villa Stempel, would he have still commissioned its construction? Here we stand, before the Villa Stempel at 4, rue Erckmann Chatrian in Strasbourg. It’s a striking example of early 20th-century architecture, completed in 1903. The Villa Stempel stands as a testament to the vision of its architects, Lütcke & Backes. While its exterior may appear as an intriguing composition of interlocking cubes, a closer look reveals its Art Nouveau influences. The central tower, capped with a glass lanternon, is a captivating feature. This lanternon, reminiscent of Victor Horta’s light wells, bathes the interior in a beautiful, natural light. Though the bombing of Strasbourg in 1944 altered the front facade, it thankfully spared this unique Jugendstil lanternon. The true magic of Villa Stempel lies within. The interior boasts a fascinating blend of styles. A Jugendstil vestibule stands alongside a neo-baroque salon. This salon features a painted ceiling depicting a Wagnerian theme. Adding to the eclectic mix, there’s also a hall adorned with Chinese and oriental motifs. One cannot overlook the exquisite front door. This carved wooden masterpiece is a testament to Art Nouveau craftsmanship. Floral motifs with long stems and elegant volutes adorn its surface. Above the door, three semicircular glass panels are protected by decorative ironwork, all sheltered by a stylish canopy. The interplay between the door and the ironwork of the entrance gate is simply breathtaking. The surrounding gate itself is embellished with flower bud motifs, mirrored on the canopy support of the side service door, and stylized animal profiles. It’s a true feast for the eyes. So, as we admire the Villa Stempel, let us remember the story of Jakob Stempel. The man who commissioned this architectural gem, yet never called it home.
