Built in 1926 Villa Skoga stands proudly. It was commissioned by Oscar Sjlander a member of the Riksdag. The architect Frederick Skoldstrom designed it in 1924. Imagine Villa Skoga then. It stood more isolated. It was north of the Kungsangen train station. Only a few houses surrounded it. A large forested area was in front of the villa.
Over time Kungsangen grew. The once-isolated Villa Skoga became part of a bustling suburb. This happened during the latter half of the 20th century. A commuter train station arrived in 1968. Today Villa Skoga sits in the heart of Kungsangen. Apartment buildings and a health center built in the 1980s surround it.
After Oscar Sjlander’s death in 1928 his widow Jenny lived there for ten years. She then sold Villa Skoga to the Baptist Boys’ Home Foundation. It became a home for 25 boys. They were described as healthy and well-behaved but poor and without parents. The basement was expanded. The main floor’s salon became a common room. The attic was fully converted into usable space.
In 1955 Villa Skoga underwent renovations. The entire electrical system was updated. The heating system changed from coal/wood to oil. An oil tank was added. A hockey rink was built on the property. It was used by the community. A major renovation took place in 1967-68. This was due to deferred maintenance. It also brought the building up to new standards. The ground was excavated for new drainage. The foundation walls were repaired and insulated.
The demand for places at Villa Skoga declined from the 1970s onward. In 1975 girls were admitted. It was renamed a school home. In 1977 the municipality wanted to buy part of the property. This was to build a new health center. The municipality acquired Villa Skoga on October 1 1978. The school home moved in 1982. Since 1983 Villa Skoga has been rented out. This is for various local groups meetings and private events. The biggest tenant was the Workers’ Educational Association. The building has received continuous maintenance since. Currently mainly the basement is used. Since 2016 Upplands-Brohus the municipal housing company manages Villa Skoga. Villa Skoga’s history reflects Kungsangen’s own growth. It is a testament to the changes in the area. Villa Skoga is more than a building. It is a living piece of history.
