Did you know that this magnificent building before you Villa Reverchon was once a military headquarters?
The Villa Reverchon stands as a testament to Trier’s rich history. Built between 1909 and 1912 it was commissioned by the Trier banker Adrian Reverchon. The renowned architect Rudolf Tillessen designed it. He collaborated with local architect Peter Marx to bring his vision to life. Reverchon even had a new access road built to his property. He called it the Reverchonweg.
This neoclassical villa served a surprising purpose during World War I. It became the headquarters of the 178th Infantry Brigade. This brigade was part of the 89th Division of the US Army. Brigadier General George Columbus Barnhardt commanded the troops. The Villa Reverchon saw further military use during World War II.
After the war the villa transformed into the Moselland Railway Workers’ Sanatorium. From 1970 to 1978 it housed a Deutsche Bundesbahn school. A new building was added to the park to accommodate two classrooms. In 1980 it became a civilian service school. After the end of civilian service the school continued to train participants in the Bundesfreiwilligendienst.
The Villa Reverchon relocated to Saarburg in 2016. Today the Trier real estate company TRIWO AG uses it as its headquarters. Remarkably the villa’s interior remains well-preserved. Its original features are largely intact despite its various uses.
Villa Reverchon even plays a role in literature. It’s the setting for Stefan Andres’ novel Die Hochzeit der Feinde The Wedding of the Enemies. However the building’s description in the novel differs from reality. Only the location is accurately portrayed.
