Whispers of Father Kentenich’s vision still linger at Villa Maria Chapel. It’s a unique place, blessed even before its stones were laid. In 1948, Father Kentenich, the founder of the Schoenstatt Movement, visited South Africa. He stayed at the Sisters’ house which remains on the Villa Maria property. He saw the potential for a shrine. He blessed a spot in the garden for this future spiritual haven, even blessing a foundation stone. This stone was later broken into pieces. One piece was placed in each of the other shrines built in the country, connecting them to Villa Maria Chapel. While the chapel wasn’t built on that exact spot, it stands close by under the gaze of Table Mountain, near South Africa’s parliament. Archbishop Owen McCann blessed Villa Maria Chapel on October 18, 1952. It became known as the Ver Sacrum Shrine, meaning “Holy Springtime”. Villa Maria Chapel offers a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle. It’s one of the few places in Cape Town open for prayer throughout the day. It is a testament to Father Kentenich’s forward-thinking vision and the dedication of the Schoenstatt Sisters.
