Lost in thought, Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt perhaps imagined stepping onto these very grounds. This is Villa Frescati. It stands as a testament to royal dreams and political intrigue. Villa Frescati is located in Frescati. That area is part of Stockholm’s Royal National City Park.
Let’s journey back to the late 18th century. King Gustav III gifted this land to his courtier, Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, in 1791. The area, formerly known as Ulriksdals storäng, was renamed Frescati. The name was inspired by the King and Armfelt’s trip to Frascati, Italy.
The villa’s design came from the mind of architect Louis Jean Desprez. Initially, plans were made for a bathhouse by Brunnsviken’s beach. These drafts influenced the Villa Frescati’s final design. Desprez envisioned a neoclassical villa. Its stairs led down to Brunnsviken’s waters. Gustav III liked the idea of traveling by boat from Hagaparken to visit Armfelt. He would travel across the water to his favorite.
However, Armfelt chose a location further up the shore. It was a less damp spot for his new villa. Construction took place from 1791 to 1792. Ironically, Armfelt never resided here. Gustav III was murdered and Armfelt fled the country.
An obelisk was planned for the grounds during Armfelt’s time. Its counterpart was intended for Hagaparken. The Hagaparken obelisk was never built. However, the Villa Frescati obelisk was constructed behind Koppartälten. Later, it was moved to Frescati. This wooden obelisk served as a full-scale model. It was a model for the Obelisk in Stockholm, now at Slottsbacken. Only the gray stone foundation remains.
In modern times, Villa Frescati has appeared on Swedish television. It was featured in the entertainment program “Bäst i test”. The show premiered in 2017. Participants faced challenges in and around what they called the “test house”.
