Imagine, if you will, a town within a city. That’s Vila Maria Zélia. It stands as a testament to a bygone era of industrial dreams and social engineering.

Inaugurated in 1917 Vila Maria Zélia was the vision of industrialist Jorge Street. He built it to house workers from his jute sack factory, Companhia Nacional de Tecidos de Juta. He named Vila Maria Zélia after his daughter. This makes it one of Brazil’s first planned communities.

Modeled after early 20th-century European towns, Vila Maria Zélia was designed by French architect Paul Pedraurrieux. He gave the buildings ornamental richness. It accommodated 2500 employees. The village included two schools one for boys and one for girls. It also included a grocery store and a church. Other facilities catered to the workers and their families.

Each of the 198 houses had relative comfort. They included amenities such as electric showers and a connection to the citywide sewage system. This was a luxury back then.

The beautifully decorated São José Chapel was another impressive addition. There was also a pharmacy, a kindergarten, a sports field, a bandstand, a clinic, and a ballroom.

However, economic troubles struck. In the 1920s and 30s, the company faced bankruptcy. Vila Maria Zélia then came under the Brazilian federal government’s custody.

During that time, part of the Vila Maria Zélia was converted into a political prison. It housed about 700 people. Some prisoners were even killed during an escape attempt in an event known as the Massacre of Maria Zélia.

Today around 600 people call Vila Maria Zélia home. Some have lived there for over half a century. The Sociedade Amigos da Vila Maria Zélia administers the space. It now operates as a community center. Various cultural and sportive events occur here.

Though a shadow of its former self Vila Maria Zélia retains rural charm. It provides a refreshing escape from the city’s constant bustle. Vila Maria Zélia stands as a living museum. It echoes stories of industry community and resilience. Take a moment to appreciate this unique village. It offers a glimpse into São Paulo’s vibrant past.
