The Viewing Cone, Kowloon Park sits at the highest point in Kowloon Park. It stands 37 metres above sea level. From here, we gain a panoramic view. We can see the park and its surroundings.

But there is something else. The Viewing Cone, Kowloon Park is built on top of a water pump room. Imagine that a water pump room has never looked so good.

Kowloon Park itself has a rich history. It was once the Whitfield Barracks of the British Army. The Urban Council transformed the site into Kowloon Park in 1970. Think about it more than 70 buildings were demolished. They made way for this green space.

The park’s first stage opened on June 24, 1970. Sir David Trench, the governor of Hong Kong, did the honors. Lion dances and folk dances marked the celebration.

Interestingly, the park’s name was a point of contention. Many wanted it named Sun Yat-sen Garden. However, the council chose the name Kowloon Park. Controversy ensued, but the name stuck.

Kowloon Park expanded from 1987 to 1989. The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club funded this expansion. The park doubled in size. It added the sports centre and swimming pool complex.

Today, Kowloon Park offers diverse facilities. There are gardens and museums. There is even an Avenue of Comic Stars. The park is a haven for bird watchers too. Around 100 wild bird species can be spotted here.

The swimming pool complex is the most used in Hong Kong. It serves over 2,000 swimmers daily. It is even a venue for major swimming events.

Even the former Kowloon West II Battery has been repurposed. It is now a children’s adventure playground. Naval guns found at a construction site adorn the emplacements.

So, as you stand here at the Viewing Cone, Kowloon Park remember its layers. It is a water pump cover and it is a vantage point. It is a structure with panoramic views.
