Vierröhrenbrunnen

Across from the Grafeneckart building stands the Vierröhrenbrunnen. It’s a popular meeting spot. The Vierröhrenbrunnen isn’t just a fountain. It’s a stage where history whispers stories of Würzburg’s past. This beautiful fountain is nestled in the heart of Würzburg’s Altstadt (Old Town). The Vierröhrenbrunnen, or Four Tubes Fountain, captivates with its unique charm. Four tubes gracefully spout water into a circular basin. It’s a living testament to 18th-century artistry and craftsmanship. Before the elegant Vierröhrenbrunnen graced this spot, a simpler well stood here. This older well dated back to the Renaissance and even the Middle Ages. It was designed by Jakob von der Auwera, a member of a prominent Würzburg sculptor family. The transformation to the Vierröhrenbrunnen began with a shift in the city’s water supply, orchestrated by Balthasar Neumann. Three decades later, around 1765, the well was enlarged and embellished. This marked the birth of the Vierröhrenbrunnen, designed to better represent the square’s importance. Lukas Anton and Peter Wagner contributed to this expansion. Look closely at the fountain’s sculptures. These aren’t the originals. The originals, vulnerable to the elements, now reside in the Museum für Franken within the Marienberg Fortress. The Vierröhrenbrunnen is crafted from Franconian Muschelkalk, the same limestone that nourishes the region’s vineyards. The central column and figures, however, are made of sandstone. Four dolphins extend their necks from the column, spouting water. Above them, figures embody the four cardinal virtues: Wisdom, Moderation, Justice, and Strength. At the very top, the figure of Frankonia reigns. A heraldic obelisk hangs from the column, adding to the fountain’s vertical elegance. The coat of arms was designed by Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim. The Vierröhrenbrunnen invites you to pause and soak in Würzburg’s atmosphere. Grab a glass of local wine, find a comfortable spot, and enjoy the vibrant scene. From here, a short walk takes you to the Alte Mainbrücke (Old Main Bridge), offering breathtaking views of the fortress and the Main River.
