Do you know that Vienna Presbyterian Church started with just nine members in 1871? The story of Vienna Presbyterian Church or VPC is one of remarkable growth and enduring faith. For over 150 years, VPC has been a beacon in the community. Its journey began humbly in 1871. Nine determined individuals established Vienna Presbyterian Church. They dedicated their first building now the Chapel in 1874.
For many years Vienna Presbyterian Church remained a small village church. Membership stayed below one hundred for about 65 years. The pastor even had to serve another church simultaneously. But World War II changed everything. The Washington DC area experienced rapid growth. Vienna also grew substantially. By 1976 Vienna Presbyterian Church had over 1351 members. It transformed into a thriving suburban congregation.
Reverend Dr. Peter G. James played a vital role in Vienna Presbyterian Church’s expansion. He joined the church in 1979 as an associate pastor. By 1986 he became the lead pastor. Under his guidance the church reached its current size. A capital campaign in 1995 enabled Vienna Presbyterian Church to expand its facilities. Another campaign in 2002 led to the construction of a new Ministry Center. It provided much needed space for Christian education and fellowship. Construction finished in January 2006. In 2017 Vienna Presbyterian Church launched a final campaign. The goal was to improve student ministry spaces and eliminate debt. Pastor Pete retired in February 2021.
Vienna Presbyterian Church celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2021. It marked an exciting new chapter for the church. That same year Vienna Presbyterian Church welcomed Rev. Dr. Hope Lee as the new lead pastor.
Today Vienna Presbyterian Church is the largest Presbyterian church in the Washington DC area and Virginia. Reverend Dr. Hope Lee leads a congregation of over 2600 members. It offers various programs including study groups fellowship activities service projects and support networks. The church actively engages in local national and international missions. Vienna Presbyterian Church is known for its spiritual vitality.
Vienna Presbyterian Church sees itself as a congregation built by faith and called to serve. This vision guides Vienna Presbyterian Church through its history. Its identity goes beyond ministers numbers and buildings. It is rooted in serving others. The expansion and modernization involved master planning architecture and interior design. The first phase introduced a new 750-seat sanctuary. It also included a gathering area classrooms and a parlor linking the new construction to the historic chapel. Later phases expanded the sanctuary to 1000 seats. A 500-seat fellowship hall new offices a preschool classroom suite over 25 new classrooms and a music suite were added. The entire campus now has a unified aesthetic. It meets the evolving needs of this historic church.
