Victoria University first dreamed of a marine lab on Wellington’s south coast. It wasn’t until the 1960s that this dream became a reality. The Island Bay Marine Lab opened its doors. It occupied a former shark liver oil processing plant. This rather unusual building served the university until 2007. Then it was demolished to make way for the modern VUCEL.
VUCEL opened in early 2009. This purpose-built facility boasts 816 square meters of research space. This includes state-of-the-art laboratories. There are wet labs with access to filtered and unfiltered seawater. There’s also ample office space for researchers and students. Up to 30 people can work here.
