Magnificent aren’t they? Victoria Baths stand before you a testament to Victorian grandeur. This isn’t just a building it’s a story etched in multi-coloured brick and gleaming tile.

Imagine 1906. The Lord Mayor declared Victoria Baths a water palace. The Manchester Corporation spared no expense. The building cost a whopping £59144. That was a considerable sum then. It provided essential washing and leisure facilities for everyone.

Three swimming pools existed. Private baths too. Even a Turkish bath a true Victorian spa. In winter the main pool transformed into a dance hall. People danced under the vaulted ceilings. Can you picture that? The shimmering tiles reflecting the light? The music echoing through the vast space?

In 1952 Victoria Baths became a pioneer. It installed the nation’s first public Aeratone bath. Think Jacuzzi but very much Victorian.

The baths weren’t just for swimming. They hosted water polo matches. Gala events and even carpet bowls. Think of the sounds of splashing laughter and friendly competition.

Sadly in 1993 Manchester City Council closed Victoria Baths. Society’s bathing habits changed. The cost of upkeep became too high. Yet this wasn’t the end.

The Friends of Victoria Baths fought to save it. They rallied the public. Their persistence led to a remarkable victory. In 2003 Victoria Baths won the BBC’s Restoration. Millions were secured to restore this water palace.

Today Victoria Baths lives on. A partially restored marvel. This architectural gem again hosts events. Weddings concerts exhibitions even dance parties. The echoes of laughter and splashing now mingle with the sounds of modern celebration. Victoria Baths continues its role as a vibrant community hub. A legacy of Victorian vision and modern determination. A true water palace reborn.
