The aroma hits you first a wave of spices and sizzling meats. Welcome to Manchester’s Curry Mile.

This isn’t just a street it’s a culinary journey. Wilmslow Road in Rusholme transforms into a vibrant tapestry of South Asian and Middle Eastern flavours. It’s earned its nickname honestly boasting the UK’s largest concentration of South Asian restaurants.

The Curry Mile’s story begins in the 1950s. Manchester’s textile industry boomed attracting many South Asian workers. They settled in Rusholme opening small cafes and restaurants. These became social hubs and the seeds of the Curry Mile were sown.

By the 1980s the name Curry Mile was common. It’s still considered a nickname but in 2008 two flags marked its beginning and end. The name sticks.

The Curry Mile isn’t static. It’s evolved. Shisha bars have appeared some in former pubs. Many restaurants have moved beyond traditional curries exploring Middle Eastern cuisine. Almost a third are now kebab houses.

Yet the heart remains. You can still find incredible curries alongside new dishes. One restaurant owner described the change as positive. He explained that now you can find everything from baklava to Indian desserts all in one evening. The Curry Mile attracts a wide range of people from local students to tourists. Even the Prime Minister has dined here.

The Curry Mile’s success is its diversity. It’s a reflection of Manchester’s multiculturalism. It’s a place where different cultures come together. This is seen in the annual Rusholme Festival which celebrates the area’s multiculturalism.

Despite the changes the Curry Mile’s legacy remains. It’s a place to experience diverse flavours and cultures. It’s a testament to Manchester’s vibrant and ever-evolving spirit. So explore its vibrant streets and tantalising aromas. Discover the rich tapestry of the Curry Mile.
